The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
