A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
